“I’m over the moon to be back in the ring, especially in Phoenix with my supporters,” shared Jaime Munguía. “We recognize Ryder’s a formidable opponent, but we’re more than ready. Training never stopped. Plus, teaming up with Freddie Roach has been awesome. We’re geared up to deliver an unforgettable night of boxing, and after clearing this hurdle, I’m keen to see everyone again in May. Viva Tijuana and Viva Mexico!”

Jaime Munguía last graced the ring in June 2023, snatching the WBC Silver Super Middleweight Championship from the tough-as-nails former world title contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a bout hailed as a potential Fight of the Year. Munguía also reigned as the WBO Super Welterweight champion from 2018 to 2019, defending his title five times.

John Ryder chimed in, “I’m thrilled this fight’s happening. I’m set to start 2024 with a bang and leave a mark on January 27.”

Ryder, known for his resilience, lasted the distance against the current, undisputed world champ and boxing sensation, Canelo Alvarez, in May 2023. He’s taken down a slew of top fighters, notably Daniel Jacobs in 2022, and currently sits as the No. 5 super middleweight in Ring Magazine’s rankings.

Oscar De La Hoya, the Chairman and CEO, beamed, “On January 27, we’re crowning the next Mexican boxing superstar — Jaime Munguía. Fans, whether at the arena or watching on DAZN, shouldn’t miss the chance to see Munguía do what Canelo couldn’t — knock John Ryder out.”

Fernando Beltran, CEO of Zanfer Boxing, added, “We’re excited for Jaime’s return to the ring. We’re all set to showcase Munguía’s readiness to take on anyone, promising an epic night of boxing in Phoenix and for the world. Que Viva Mexico!”

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Chairman, noted, “I’m delighted we’ve lined up another massive fight for John. His last outing against Canelo in Guadalajara was intensely challenging, but John’s bravery and performance earned him many new fans. Now, he’s up against another brilliant Mexican fighter, Jaime Munguía. We believe John will be Jaime’s toughest challenge yet and are confident of John dealing Jaime his first loss.”

Alfie Sharman, VP of DAZN, expressed, “The wait’s finally over. This is one of the UK’s biggest fights. The initial buzz was huge, but this time it’s even more significant. DAZN aims to bring the best fights to our subscribers, and this fight definitely fits the bill. So, make sure to tune in live and exclusively on DAZN.”

Munguía vs. Ryder, a 12-round fight, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Matchroom Boxing, available globally to DAZN subscribers, both live and on demand.

JAIME MUNGUÍA, FORMER WORLD CHAMPION: “Big thanks to Golden Boy and Zanfer for this shot. Ryder’s no walk in the park, but this fight’s my ticket to bigger things.”

“I’m not itching for a knockout of John Ryder. I’ve got the skills and I’m ready to rumble. If a KO comes, it’ll just be part of the game.”

FREDDIE ROACH, TRAINER TO JAIME MUNGUÍA: “Jaime Munguía? The guy’s got a punch like a sledgehammer. He’s in the gym day in, day out, busting his chops. This guy can go the distance any day.”

FERNANDO BELTRAN, CEO OF ZANFER BOXING: “Working with Jaime Munguía? It’s been a wild ride, and I’m super proud of the guy. He’s as loyal as they come, and works like a beast. It’s been a blast being part of his journey.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF GOLDEN BOY: “Today’s the day where the future kicks off. Jaime’s got a tough fight on his hands, but with Freddie Roach backing him up, we’re hoping he’ll pull off what Canelo couldn’t. We’re all in on Jaime Munguía and looking forward to an amazing 2024.”
